Cleaning your Office Workstations and Personal Computers
Cleaning the inside of your computer and your computer components and peripherals helps keep the components and your computer in good working condition and helps keep the computers from overheating and spreading germs.

To the above right are two example images of how dirty the inside of your computer case can get. The first shows a clogged cooling fan and the CPU heat sink, and the second shows a clogged CPU heat sink ..

"So we can all agree that the dust in your PC is a major factor contributing to the overheating of a CPU and is pretty important to clean."

If there is too much dust in your PC, the cooling fans would not work efficiently, creating so much heat that it would eventually cause your CPU to overheat and eventually malfunction causing the PC to lock up.

Once the CPU fails, there is no alternative to replacing this costly component.

Why clean the inside of the computer case?

Ask any qualified computer technician - They will tell you that it is critical computers are rid of dust.
Although each speck may not amount to much, when dust is left to accumulate, it can wreak havoc on your system.

Keeping your CPU, monitor, keyboard and mouse dust-free can go a long way in extending the life of your computer.

Computers have moving parts inside them. There are a minimum of 2 fans inside the case: one that cools the Central Processing Unit (CPU), and the other one inside the power supply.

Often there is a third “case” fan to keep the whole system cool.

If the dust builds up on these fans, they may seize and fail to operate – resulting in an overheated system. This can damage your motherboard and ultimately your hard drive… a potential disaster.

Just as regular oil changes and tune-ups will help keep your car in satisfactory working condition, office workstations and personal computers at home can benefit from preventive maintenance.

All told, dust can cause the most damage to your computer.

Keeping the fan vents free of dust is particularly critical.

If the dust builds up, the computer will overheat and damage your CPU and/or power supply.
So, how often should you

"Service your PC?"

There is really no answer to this question.

It just depends on your computer and the environment you use it in. Through experience I could say once every 3 months if you have a particularly dusty or dirty location, but "particularly dusty or dirty" might well mean something different to you than it does me.

As a rule of thumb, if you see an accumulation of dust on the inside of your computer's fan, it's probably time.

And if you turn your keyboard over and shake it and last week's lunch or dinner crumbs falls out, then it's definitely time.

Location

The ideal location for your computer is a relatively dust free and cool room. Heat is your computer's worst enemy, and dust and dirt prevent that heat from being dissipated.

Now, out here in the real world, there's really no such thing as a dust (or fur) free room. But knowing that those are the issues, if you can keep the area around your computer clean it'll help prevent much of the gunk from getting into your computer in the first place.

For maximum speed and efficiency, most PC Technicians will agree to recommending a service of your PC every 3 months in a very dusty (factory) environment or six to nine months regardless of what type location your PC is in.
